  5. THE SETI SIGNAL

  7. With this colourful and eventful history of mysterious signals from 
  8. space behind us, let us turn to the matter at hand.  The broadcast
  9. in question stated that this most recent signal originated from the
  10. star Virginis 70, which is believed to be of a similar type to our
  11. Sun, and specifically that the signal was coming from the planet 
  12. that had recently been discovered in orbit around the star.  When I
  13. first heard the report I was with someone, who although not versed
  14. in the possibilities of ET contact, was nevertheless just as 
  15. stunned as I was by this announcement which could possibly lead to
  16. the confirmation of an extra terrestrial civilization.  It was 
  17. therefore quite amazing that I could not find any other mention of
  18. this report on the TV or radio news for the rest of that day, and 
  19. totally dumbfounding when the Sunday papers that I managed to read
  20. did not give the slightest mention of the signal.  The next step 
  21. had to be to check with the BBC to see if the content of the 
  22. broadcast was accurate, and if so then to try to find the source of
  23. that report in order to validate the claims.  On the 13th of 
  24. February I sent a letter to BBC Radio 5 asking for any additional 
  25. information that they had on the report.  To date I have not 
  26. received a reply to either that letter, or to the subsequent 
  27. telephone calls that I have made with reference to it.

  29. As I have already mentioned I have only been able to track down two
  30. other reports about the signal.  The first is a rather sketchy 
  31. account from the United States about a report on NBC News during 
  32. the evening of the 28th February.  Apparently the report mentioned 
  33. that the Hubble Telescope had recorded a 'strange pulsating signal'
  34. coming from the Virginis system, in addition to showing photographs 
  35. of the newly discovered planet.  The second report comes from the 
  36. Observer News Service and is perhaps the most detailed.  It states 
  37. that the signal was discovered by scientists working on the 
  38. Serendip 3 project which is part of the SETI program.  The signal 
  39. was picked up by instruments dedicated to isolating any unusual, 
  40. repetitive signals that may indicate an intelligent origin.   When 
  41. they studied the Virginis system they found that some of the signals
  42. were highly unusual and of a repetitive nature, which has prompted 
  43. the group to undertake a new search of space near the star later 
  44. this year.  It is curious as to why there would be any delay in 
  45. trying to find out more about this signal.

  47. Despite checking with the 'experts', none of the Astronomers that 
  48. I have spoken to know anything about this signal, the BBC will not,
  49. or can not respond to my request for clarification, and the rest of
  50. the media has not run the story.  It's times like this when you 
  51. feel as if you are banging your head against the proverbial brick 
  52. wall, after all these were supposed to be commercial and public 
  53. service organizations that I was asking for information from, not 
  54. government departments!  I was therefore greatly relieved when a 
  55. contact of mine who works for the BBC, but who also has a very 
  56. healthy interest in the paranormal, offered to check out the story 
  57. from the inside, and kindly searched the BBC Information and 
  58. Newspaper libraries for any snippet of information on this report. 
  59. Unfortunately, but perhaps unsurprisingly, the search turned out to
  60. be in vain as both sources proved to be spotlessly clean and absent
  61. of information.

  64. IN CONCLUSION

  66. In conclusion I must admit that I have the strong feeling that we, 
  67. the general public, are not being told everything about this signal
  68. from the stars.  Why would one of the most respected broadcasting 
  69. companies in the world run a story and then have no record of it 
  70. only a few weeks later?  Why have only two other media sources 
  71. mentioned the signal, and then only briefly, and why have the 
  72. astronomers, who should be the first to know about this signal, not
  73. heard anything at all about it?

  75. As much as I am loath to admit it, it seems that a cover-up could 
  76. very well have been in operation, but why go to all this trouble to
  77. suppress what should have been the most remarkable news report ever?  
  78.  
  79. Well there is a theory that we, the human race, are just not ready
  80. for contact with an extra terrestrial civilization and that our 
  81. governments are acting in our own self interest in protecting us 
  82. from the truth.  Other theories state, despite almost 
  83. incontrovertible anecdotal evidence to the contrary, that there is 
  84. in fact no life outside of our solar system and that the Earth is 
  85. the only planet capable of supporting life amongst the undoubted 
  86. billions of planets in the Universe.  However there is also another
  87. theory which suggests that our governments are scared of what ET 
  88. contact will mean for the citizens of the planet Earth.  They fear 
  89. a breakdown in social order.  They fear a 'complete' breakdown in 
  90. conventional religion which is already in serious decline.  They 
  91. fear the loss of control.....
